And We're Back...

And we're back... I moved everything over to WordPress but then our desktop had severe issues, Peter broke a brand new laptop (insert crying, tears, and lamentations here) and I couldn't really update anything for almost a year. In the process, I somehow lost my rights to the copingwithautism.com URL and now if I want it, I'll have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for it. No, thank you. I'm back to Blogger.

A number of things have happened in the last year. Last year, our daughter graduated from high school and we have discovered since that she really should be looked at again by a professional. There are suggestions that she may have mild Asperger's (which I have always suspected but didn't think was necessary to diagnose). It has been an issue since graduation (and her attempt at college last semester) and just "adulting" in general.

The boys are doing well. Peter is now in high school and Nathan is set to finish this year mainstreamed and enter high school next year. I hope he will be mainstreamed there as well. We'll see but, at his IEP meeting, we were all in agreement that he seemed to do well mainstreamed with oversight and classroom aides. Next year, the plan is to have him mainstreamed and give him a resource hour with a teacher and aides so he can work on assignments and projects where he can ask questions (or retrieve items from his locker to finish work assignments). His working memory still has much room for improvement but he's doing better everyday.

Peter is in the autism class in high school and, as usual, takes laziness to unbelievable levels, but he is a hoot to be around and everyone loves him. He is our gentle giant and, at 15, he is a good foot taller than I am (I'm only 5 feet tall). He is learning to play the piano and we discovered a few years ago that he has perfect pitch and can pick out a melody and play it by ear. His teacher is very hopeful that he will be able to play much more complex pieces.

This is the latest. I hope to return this weekend with more updates as well as cover what we have done and not done in terms of therapy and treatments.
